STEP 1 – Encourage your son to be in touch with and express his feelings. Set the example for him by expressing your feelings appropriately.

STEP 2 – Encourage him to try out for a variety of sports and clubs. Expose him to lots of opportunities and show him what’s available. Let him choose what he wants to participate in. He might decide that something is not for him and that’s OK. By being informed about all the possibilities, he’ll discover his interests and talents.

STEP 3 – Permit your son to fail, and when he does, help him figure out how to fix it next time. Say to him, “I’ll help you figure out what you can do to succeed.”

STEP 4 – Teach your son to cook, do his laundry and manage money.

STEP 5 – Give him a good quality shaving kit when it’s time for his first shave. Show him how to use it. Make a big deal about what a delightful, handsome young man he is.

STEP 6 – Take him on an outdoor adventure. Teach him to cook over a camp fire. Show him how to skip rocks on a lake. Tell ghost stories.

STEP 7 – Show him how to change a tire, look under the hood and change the oil. Make go-carts and invite his friends to race with you.

STEP 8 – Show affection. Hug him often. Tell him again and again that you want a good relationship with him. Treat his mother well.

STEP 9 – Teach him to be a peaceful warrior. Tell him that violence does not solve problems or prove his manhood. Show him how to negotiate and solve problems. Instruct him in peaceful and powerful ways.
